Hygiene and Sanitization with UV-C rays against COVID-19

Coronavirus is sensitive to UV-C rays according to the Multilingual epidemic control manuals for COVID-19 published by the National Health Commission of China (7th edition dated 4 March 2020) and according to a multidisciplinary experimental study carried out by a group of researchers from the University of Milan that work in the Luigi Sacco hospital, the Lombard reference center for the epidemic. The National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF), the National Cancer Institute of Milan (INT) and the IRCCS Don Gnocchi Foundation also collaborated in the research.

This team of researchers says that ultraviolet rays have an effect on the Covid-19 virus: they manage to inactivate the viral load.
In the experiment, droplets of liquid of different sizes containing Sars-CoV-2 were placed under the lamps, to simulate what can be emitted by speaking or with a sneeze.

A low dose of virus has been used in the experiment (what can be found in a room where a positive is present), a hundred times higher dose (which can be found in a subject with severe form of Covid-19).
Then, a quantity thousand times higher, impossible to find in a human being or in any real situation, has been evaluated.

In all three cases the viral load was inactivated to 99.9% in a few seconds by a small amount of UV-C rays.

How UV-C rays work

Light is one of many forms of energy in the form of radiation: it extends from radio waves to cosmic rays and is cataloged in 16 different types according to their wavelength.
Ultraviolet light is an interval of electromagnetic radiation and has a wavelength slightly less than the light visible by the human eye, and slightly higher than that of X-rays.
Ultraviolet radiation is divided into three bands of different wavelengths called UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. The exact wavelengths on which the three bands are defined vary according to the specific areas of study. The most used subdivision is however the following:

  • UV-A: 315 – 400 nm: they have a low energy level and are responsible for tanning.
  • UV-B: 280 – 315 nm:they have a higher energy level than UV-A and cause harmful effects that are not particularly serious for the human body.
  • UV-C: 200 – 280 nm:they have a high energy content and have been studied by TPA in order to be used in bacterial and virus disinfection processes.

The germicidal effect is due to the destructive effect exerted by UV-C radiation on the DNA of bacteria, viruses, spores, fungi, molds and mites: UV-C rays, in fact, damage their reproductive system and prevent their spread.
UV-C rays have a strong germicidal effect and are most effective at the wavelength of 253.7 nm (nanometers).
